Fresh Air Interview w/ Terry Gross postponed until tomorrow or later this week

Posted on by Mira

Due to the tragic shootings in Arizona, my interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air will be postponed until tomorrow, Tuesday the 11th or Wednesday. But I’m not certain of the date so please check the website for updates: www.npr.org. My heart goes out to the families who suffered such terrible losses this week.

The Memory Palace Has Arrived!

Posted on by Mira

I am taking off for New York on Monday to be there for the book launch of The Memory Palace, which comes out in stores on Tuesday, Jan. 11th but rumor has it that it is already at many stores now and you can order it on amazon and other online stores as well. (However, if you live near an indie bookstore, gee, wouldn’t it be great to support them instead?)

I have a lot of events scheduled across the country and will continue to add readings and other kinds of events to my calendar so please check it from time to time to see if I will be in your neighborhood. You can do that by going here: http://thememorypalace.com/calendar or by clicking on “Events” from the navigation bar above.

A couple big things coming up: tomorrow, if you get the New York Times, check out the Book Review section for a giant full page review of my book. You can also read it online right now by clicking here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/books/review/Thernstrom-t.html Pretty positive—overall. Next, on Monday, January 10th, I will be on NPR’s Fresh Air! I love Fresh Air and listen to Terry Gross all the time so it was an enormous honor to be interviewed by her. Check your local NPR station for when it will air on the radio in your part of the world. Then, on Tuesday, the 11th, I will be live, on WNYC, talking to Leonard Lopate on his show from 12:40 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. I’m certainly not used to being on the radio so wish me luck. I hope I don’t burp or anything.

More news on the way….also, after my book tour gets underway, I will start posting some things about brain injury, mental illness, homelessness and various issues that I touch upon in my book. And I’ll also post some quirky little things too, that have nothing to do with those subjects, because my book is not just about those issues—it is also about art and science, memory systems, natural history, the imagination, new research in neuroscience, and the weird country that is our brain.

I hope to see some of you at one of my events. Cheers,
Mira

The Memory Palace Launch Update & Interviews

Posted on by Mira

Greetings all! I just want to remind you to check my calendar to see if I will be reading in your neighborhood sometime in the next couple months. If you are around Amherst, MA on Friday, January 14th at 5 pm, please come to my book launch party at Amherst Books! I have read little snippets of the book there over the last couple years and am happy to celebrate the launch at one of my favorite indie bookstores.

Speaking of Indie Bookstores, if you have a second, please check out this amazingly thoughtful and in-depth interview I did with Marilyn Dahl for Shelf Awareness’s Maximum Shelf. Lots of pictures from the book, an interview with Free Press Editor-in-Chief Dominick Anfuso (who is blessed with much awesome-saucism, as is my other incredible editor, Leah Miller!), and some quirky little details from my life. She did an amazing job. Click here for the interview: http://www.shelf-awareness.com/issue.html?issue=1346#m10893 Another recent interview (with John T. Slania) can be found on bookpage.com: http://www.bookpage.com/books-10014047-The+Memory+Palace

I hope to see you all at one of the events and readings this winter or spring. And please come back to this blog for future posts about brain injury, memory and other assorted topics.

Cheers,
Mira

Greetings and welcome to the Memory Palace Blog!

Well, this afternoon my dog Sadie got very excited because the UPS man came to my door with a big box. Sadie loves the UPS man. He gives her treats so what’s not to love? When I saw the box I knew what was inside—my books finally arrived from Free Press (Simon & Schuster). They looked beautiful, all in their little cozy rows! The book officially comes out in stores on January 11th, 2011, but you can pre-order it now and get it earlier than that since they are now all nicely printed and bound. I must say, I am rather fond of Indie bookstores myself but I will not berate you if you stop reading this post right now and go directly to amazon or Barnes & Noble and whip out that credit card. But if you don’t, please do consider your local indie. They are my friends and I’d like to keep them moving and grooving along.

It’s rather odd to work on something so long (almost five years!) and then at long last, see the fruits of your labor. Now I’m off to take the book on the road! First stop—New York City for the Leonard Lopate show on WNYC on January 11th. Keep checking my events calendar to see new additions. And check back on my blog for future posts about the book and book tour shenanegins, my odd little creative process, issues I deal with in the book (mental illness, homelessness, living with a traumatic brain injury), and quirky esoteric things that interest me, such as ancient memory systems, new research in neuroscience and other odds and ends.

I’m looking forward to seeing some of you at my readings, especially those of you who are Mira’s List fans! And if any of you are by a news stand this coming month, take a peek in O Magazine, Elle, and Bust. More reviews coming in January and February…that’s all for now. Thanks for reading this and welcome to The Memory Palace. Cheers, Mira
